Candidates Forum at All Nations Church

by David DeMullé

“IT WAS THE BIGGEST AND BEST WE’VE EVER HAD!” is how they will describe the CD-7 Candidates Forum last Saturday at the All Nations Church. There were almost 120 people (including the 19 candidates) attending and scarfing up the really great food. Unfortunately, it was only promoted by a few people on their “closed” FaceBook sites and not in any of the local print media. I know that they were all saying to themselves, “We’re not going to let Doc or Sonia’s paper have the information. We’ll show them!” Our little town has so many small-minded people running it that it is a miracle that anything gets done at all. I want to commend and thank everyone that actually showed up Saturday; they are the real heroes of our community.

The rules were calmly stated and called out by moderator Dana Stangel at the beginning that there would be only ONE minute for each candidate to make his statement of intent. Then there would be a meet and greet in the patio with candidates tables and food available for everyone. The pledge of Allegiance was called but unfortunately the All Nations Church doesn’t provide American flags for their events. The first four candidates toed the line and did very well and then it started going downhill. Candidates went from 2 to 3 to four minutes and Stangel did nothing to curtail the vocal candidates. Unfortunately for the first candidates who only had ONE minute, the others snowballed them under. I guess that some people feel entitled to do what they want, in spite of it not being fair. This election is really going to be something to see. 65,000 people live in S-T. 100 people showed up. How many are going to show up in the March election? We can only hope for the best. All the candidates were asked their opinion on Measures S & H. Here are their answers.
