Holiday Boutique and Chili Bowl Sale at McGroarty

by David DeMullé

The community was invited to enjoy some oldfashioned holiday cheer at the annual Holiday Boutique and Chili Bowl Sale held at historic McGroarty Arts Center, which has been fully decorated for the season. This year will marked a full weekend of events. On Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., shoppers were able to pick out a favorite bowl, handcrafted by the artists in the Ceramics Department, and fill it with the homemade chili of their choice while enjoying live music. Top local musicians provided ambient music throughout the day.

The chili bowl sale provides a very affordable lunch, and the ceramic bowl is yours to keep. Visitors were able to select from hundreds of different bowls and dozens of chili recipes with all the fixings. Vegetarian and vegan meal options were also available. On Sunday, Dec. 3, kids of all ages were enjoying decorating holidaythemed cookies. Santa Claus stopped by and everyone could sit on his lap and get their photo taken. There was something there for everyone.

A special Holiday Boutique was held on both Saturday and Sunday. Shoppers found a treasure trove of unique items created by local community of artists and craftsmen. Original paintings, photographs, soaps, lotions and jewelry are just some of the treasures for sale.

The McGroarty Arts Center Holiday Boutique and Chili Bowl Sale is a not just an annual tradition, it is the premier social/artistic gathering in the Sunland-Tujunga area for the year.
